FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Mastery Begins with Clarity.
General
- 01Stocking African Cichlids is both science and strategy. As a general rule, African Cichlids thrive in slightly overstocked environments to help disperse aggression — but this must be balanced with proper filtration and maintenance. The real factors include: • Tank size • Filtration capacity • Species temperament • Aquascape structure • Water change discipline For example: A 75-gallon African Cichlid tank can typically house 15–25 juveniles, depending on species and filtration power. Mastery isn’t about “how many can I fit.” It’s about building a stable ecosystem. Association Members receive structured stocking blueprints for different tank sizes.
- 02Never rush the nitrogen cycle. A new tank must fully cycle before adding fish. This process typically takes 2–6 weeks depending on your method. The tank is ready when: • Ammonia = 0 ppm • Nitrite = 0 ppm • Nitrate is present Adding fish before the tank is biologically stable can result in stress, disease, or loss. Patience builds longevity.
- 03Proper acclimation reduces stress and shock during transition. Recommended process: Float the sealed bag in your tank for 15–20 minutes to equalize temperature. Open the bag and slowly add small amounts of tank water every 5 minutes for 20–30 minutes. Net the fish into the tank (avoid pouring shipping water into your aquarium). Turn off tank lights during introduction to reduce stress. Professional tip: Dim lighting and minimal disturbance in the first 24 hours dramatically improves adaptation.
- 04Shipping stress can temporarily disorient fish. Immediate steps: • Dim the lights. • Add an air stone for increased oxygen. • Gently place the fish into clean, stable water. • Avoid tapping or disturbing the tank. Most fish recover within several hours once oxygen and stability are restored. If symptoms persist beyond 24 hours, contact us with photos and video so we can assess properly. We stand behind our genetics.
- 05The fastest method is a seeded cycle. Options include: • Using established filter media from a healthy tank • Adding bottled beneficial bacteria • Running a fishless cycle with pure ammonia Even with shortcuts, testing is non-negotiable. Cycling is not about speed. It’s about biological stability. Inner Circle Members receive advanced cycling frameworks to accelerate safely.
- 06Sexing African Cichlids depends on: • Color intensity • Body shape • Egg spots • Venting (advanced method) • Species-specific traits In many species: Males display brighter coloration and larger finnage. Females often appear slightly duller. However, juveniles can be difficult to sex until maturity. If you’re unsure, send clear photos and we’ll guide you.
- 07For African Cichlids: 25–40% weekly water changes are ideal. Heavy stocking or aggressive feeding may require more frequent changes. Stable parameters prevent: • Stress • Parasites • Cloudy eye • Fungal outbreaks Water quality is the foundation of elite tanks. No supplement replaces maintenance discipline.
- 08African Cichlids require powerful mechanical and biological filtration. We recommend: • Canister filters for tanks 55 gallons and up • Sump systems for advanced setups • Supplemental powerheads for circulation Aim for: 6–10x turnover rate per hour. Filtration is not where you cut corners. It is the engine of your ecosystem.
- 09Generally, no. African Cichlids (especially Malawi species) require: • Higher pH (7.8–8.6) • Harder water • Different aggression patterns Most Central and South American species prefer softer, more acidic water and exhibit different territorial behaviors. Mixing them often leads to stress or instability. Specialized tanks produce the best results.
- 10First rule: Diagnosis before medication. Most health issues stem from: • Poor water quality • Stress • Inconsistent maintenance Step 1: Test water parameters. Step 2: Perform a water change. Step 3: Isolate if necessary. For external parasites: Use targeted treatments like praziquantel or ich-specific medication depending on diagnosis. For fungal issues: Antifungal treatments combined with improved water quality are effective. Never medicate blindly. Inner Circle Members gain access to structured health protocols and treatment frameworks.
